The Ritual Tarot by Tiera May channels the art of practical magic and the power of ritual. A visual artist and musician from Northern California, Tiera May’s art explores mythology, folklore and mysticism through collage. Created over two years, each individual card in the Ritual Tarot was constructed exclusively via analogue collage. This new Marked Edition of the Ritual Tarot includes 80 cards with two bonus cards, Lust and Fool's Journey. In this Marked Edition each card's name is hidden on the back of the card within the zodiac wheel.

Following the structure and symbolism of the Rider Waite Smith and Crowley Thoth Tarot, the Ritual Tarot comes with a 62-page, full colour, perfect bound guidebook with descriptions of every card for further insight. The faces of the cards in the Ritual Tarot are nameless and do not feature titles or numbers. The artist’s intention behind this is to encourage the reader to develop their own meanings and form a more intimate, intuitive connection to the tarot.

The spirit of this project originated from introspection, soul searching and exploration. The Ritual Tarot was created to offer deeper insight and direction, to encourage you to develop your own meanings and create your own ritual.

Surprisingly compatible deck

I recently received my Ritual Tarot and as part of getting to know the deck I have been playing around with pairings. In spite of it being a really distinctive and in some ways jarring deck visually it plays surprisingly well with other decks, and I think pairing it with a simple/minimalist oracle with a strong keyword/phrase really helps pull the meanings out of the artwork and plays into the strengths of collage.

I was also pleasantly surprised that I am finding it pretty darn legible/readable even though there are no labels. It helps if you broaden you recognition to include Thoth as well as RWS imagery.

The guidebook is easy to navigate and the majors are comprehensively covered, the minors are only given brief keywords as for any LWB.

Cardstock is pleasant to shuffle and handle.
