Rainbow Moonstone is actually a variety of Labradorite rather than a true Moonstone. It is a white, orthoclase feldspar, with characteristic blue flashes called Adularescence. These beautiful moon beam like flashes are caused by the diffraction of light as it hits thin, alternating layers of orthoclase and albite. There are many ancient beliefs about this lunar stone. The Ancient Romans believed that it was formed from drops of moonlight, and that the light inside was the Goddess of the Moon, Diana. Thought to be an aphrodisiac, they believed that if two people wore this crystal during the full moon they would fall in love. Ancient Asian cultures similarly believed that the light inside was a living Spirit, and would attract great abundance. According to Hindu belief, Rainbow Moonstone was formed from solidified moonbeams, and is embedded in the forehead of the Moon God Ganesha. Today it is still regarded as a very sacred stone with many rituals.
