Amethyst is a purple variety of Quartz, the colour caused by inclusions of iron and aluminium. The name Amethyst comes from the Greek word ‘Amethystos’, meaning ‘not drunk’. The ancient Greeks believed Amethyst protected against addiction and used the crystal as a talisman against drunkenness. One of the myths of the Greek God Dionysus tells the story of how in an inebriated state Dionysus set his tigers on the young maiden Amethysta. Afterwards, realising what he had done, he turned her into a giant Clear Quartz crystal. His tears of sorrow stained the Clear Quartz purple, creating the first Amethyst.

Amethyst pairs well with other varieties of Quartz, including Citrine, Smoky Quartz, Clear Quartz, Tiger’s Eye and Agate. Other stones which enhance Amethyst crystals protective vibes include Black Tourmaline and Obsidian.
